A Blog About My Favorite Things

The Loo!

June 12, 2009 by Kristin Fields 16 Comments

It’s that time again. There’s a blog party at Kelly’s because it’s “Show Us Where You Live Friday!”

This week is a bathroom tour and since we only have one, that made it a pretty easy selection. When our house was built there was no indoor plumbing. There was an outhouse for potty breaks and a stove in the cellar to cook on. I’m glad I didn’t live here then! Sometime before we bought the house, a kitchen and bathroom were added.

This is the view from the door. One of the things I loved when we first looked at this house was that the original clawfoot tub was still in the bathroom. Ultimately, I’d like to have it refinished and painted black on the outside and white on the inside. It is perfect for a deep bath and my daughter and dog both love it. You can see Ella’s toys stored in an enamel bin underneath. I love not having toys strewn around in our tiny room. The wainscotting was here when we moved in, but we added the toile wallpaper. You can see it’s starting to peel a little and we’re thinking of giving this room a little facelift soon. I just can’t decide what to do on the walls! In the bottom right-hand corner of the photo you can see a thread spool nailed to the wall. We have these in every room… they appear to be homemade door stoppers. Charming, right?

The demilune table above was my grandmother’s. I recently painted it green and skirted it with an old pillowcase. Since the clawfoot provides very little storage, we use this table both to hide the exterior plumbing fixtures and hold our bath supplies.

This is a cabinet we’ve had since we first got married and although I’m not a fan of over-the-toilet cabinets in general, I kind of like this one. All of our ugly supplies are inside and the pretty ones are on top. You can get a little glimpse of the stained glass window in here, too; there is another one above the tub. Ahem, yes those are playing cards on the back of the toilet. You’ll have to discuss that with my husband.

This is the vanity with my too cute toile lamp and a few green accessories. I got the enamelware canisters at TJ, although I have several vintage pieces in the room, too.

This is my favorite part. Last month I was inspired to paint something green after reading a post on Design Mom. I toyed around with painting several different things including the little table next to the tub. This cabinet has been in the bathroom a while, but due to some poor paint mixing skills at the hardware store it was painted navy blue instead of black. I lived with it for several months, but it was really bothering me. Since I managed to have today off, Ella and I finally cracked open that can of green paint and went to work. I love how it turned out. The open shelving at the top originally had a pull-down desktop. I had to take it off to paint it anyway and LOVED the way it looked without. I began stripping the hardware several days ago, but only got through one layer and kind of loved the way it looked.

This little niche actually houses an additional door to the bathroom, but it opens into the kitchen. We found it very awkward and since we REALLY needed storage space in this house, we opted to build in some shelves for storage instead. All of our towels, washcloths, laundry bins and other bathroom supplies are housed here. We plan on covering the door completely this summer when we renovate our kitchen.

I hope you enjoyed the tour and will come back again next week. Don’t forget to visit Kelly’s bathroom post and take in all that inspiration!
