Nursery Update | Rock and Roll

March 11, 2010 by Kristin Fields 2 Comments

I was in love with this wire rocker found at an antique mall a year or so ago. It was part of a mismatched set that I picked up for $75, that included a table and two other matching chairs. This chair has been in the craft room all along with a quick and easy cushion I added, but it was never really functional. I knew I wanted something different for Sophie’s nursery, so Garan & I decided to make new cushions and find an ottoman to complete the look.

Lucky for me, K had an old ottoman that was in storage that was the perfect size and match. The legs still need to be painted cream to match the chair, but the slipcover turned out great! We used an old chenille bedspread and mom made a simple slipcover. I liked the fringe from the coverlet so much, that I cut it off and hot glued it to the bottom of the slipcover. Then I alternated between covered buttons in coordinating fabrics and vintage buttons from mom’s stash to create a decorative treatment above the fringe. Adorable, right?

We took the original seat cushion and cut it in half {trashing the back piece}, covered it in 2 inch foam and reupholstered it with chenille on the front and a pink and brown damask print on the back. There are fabric ties to secure it made from left-over curtain fabric. The back piece was made from 2 inch foam wrapped in batting and upholstered with chenille on the front and solid brown damask on the back. Again, we made fabric ties from two different fabrics.

Since I wanted throw pillows that could be tucked in under my arm or behind my back while nursing, but also wanted something we could use on a big girl bed down the road, my mom made several loose, down-filled pillows and covered them with various fabrics picked out for the nursery. One is trimmed in pink ric-rac and the other is finished off with more of the fringe detail from the coverlet.

Despite it’s iron frame, this rocker is surprisingly comfy. We’ve all tested it out and I hate to get out of it once I’m settled in. Even Ella has given it her seal of approval!
